Rod Tip Repair

Well you stepped on your rod and crushed the tip or broke it off, what do you do now? Well I recommend that you take the rod to your local tackle/repair shop. They should be able to repair that tip for you immediately.

Special Note These tips are intended to help, with rod tip repair on rods that have not had,
more than the tip up to the first line guide broken off. Rods with more than the tip to past the first line guide missing, should be taken to your local rod repair shop for re spacing of the guides and tip, or return the rod to the manufacturer for repair.

If you would rather do it yourself then....

Step 1. If you just crushed the tip and did not break the rod blank off. You will need to measure (using a tip top gauge) the tip, and order a replacement kit. If you do not have a tip top gauge then use a caliper and measure one half inch from the tip and convert your reading into 64th.
Example: 8/64 = size 8 tip

Step 2. If you broke the rod blanks tip off, you then need to use a caliper to measure one half inch from the tip to get your size or a Drill Bit Gauge see step 3. Convert your reading into 64th and that is your size.
Example: 5/64 = size 5 tip

Step 3. Again If you broke the rod tip off you can also use a Drill Bit Gauge to measure one half inch from the tip to get your size, and order a replacement kit. If you don't have a bit gauge they are cheap and available at most any home improvement and tool stores. Again convert your reading into 64th and that is your size.
Example: 1/8" = 8/64" = size 8 tip

Step 4. After you have sized the tip for the replacement, you need to goto the on-line store here and order your replacement tip kit

Steps 5 & 6 are followed if you didn't break or crush the rod tip off!
(The Shock Ring Falls Out)

Step 5. Ok after you have obtained your tip repair set, it is time to get the old tip off of the rod. Using a lighter or an alcohol lamp, gently heat the old tip. (*important* do not over heat the rod blank)

Step 6. After heating the old rod tip, using a pair of needle nose pliers, gently twist the old tip back and forth to break the bond (this may take more than one try). Once you feel the tip turning add some pull to it and it should slide off.

Step 7. Once the old tip has been removed or if it has been broken off, it is time to prepare the rod blank for the new tip. Using a medium grade sand paper (i'm using 100 grit here), gently removed the old bonding material from the tip area. In the case of a broken tip, using the same 100 grit and gently clean up the fractured end of the rod. Do not sand the rod tip surface, just the fractured end.
You are now ready to replace the tip.

Step 8. Next heat the new tip with your lighter, this will help you to get the tip bond down into the tips tube.

Step 9. Now press the rod tips tube onto the glue stick that came with your new tips. Try to get it to flow down into the tube, do this a couple of times to insure that you have the bond down into the tip.

Step 10. Now heat the new tip again, to soften the bonding material. Now your ready to slide the new tip on.

Step 11. Slide the new rod tip onto the blank until it stops and align with your guides.

Now your favorite rod is ready for your next fishing trip.

Always keep a Rod Tip Repair Kit in your tackle box or boat.
You can use this same process for field repairs on your rods
